Decorating for Thanksgiving

For the retail industry it has become common to make a jump from Halloween directly to Christmas. Stores are displaying their Christmas decorations, Christmas music is being played and visits from Santa have started.

Let's not forget Thanksgiving! As family and friends gather for a feast the right decor can help set the mood. The autumn colors are a wonderful palette to use for decorating. Add some pilgrim or turkey decor or decorate with acorns, leaves and a cornucopia for a festive traditional look.

There is always plenty of cleanup after the meal, so why not give yourself a break and select Fall or Thanksgiving themed disposable plate ware for serving the desserts.
Costumes aren't just for Halloween or even Christmas anymore. Why not add a cool twist to your Thanksgiving holiday by dressing up or recreating the first Thanksgiving in costume. We offer costumes such as a Turkey Mascot, pilgrims and Native American attire, or maybe just a pilgrim hat to add some fun to your gathering.
What ever your festivities entail, have a fun and safe Thanksgiving weekend! Our store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day for our employees to enjoy this time with their families.
We will be back open for business on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:00 am.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Nick & Bonnie

Being Thankful

With Thanksgiving just a little over a week away I've been reflecting upon all the things to be thankful for. As with any business or life for that matter, there are ups and downs but making a conscious effort to keep positive and grateful for all is the place I want to be.

Today I want to say thank you to people whom I am grateful for. Nick & I are absolutely thankful for the wonderful employees we have. They all have their special niches and styles that blend to make an amazing team. So, thank you to Drake, Jennifer, Jerry, Shirley and Stefany for all their efforts.

Thank you to our wonderful landlord Chuck who has always been supportive of our business, works to assist us during Halloween with the craziness of the parking lot as well as throughout the rest of the year.

Thank you to our customers who support our business, some once a year and others many times throughout the year. It is fun to get to know you and it is our pleasure to serve you. Special appreciation to Phil & Sharon, Stu & Tim, Erica, Chris D., Dr. Ingle and The Staff at Providence Health Services who regularly support our store.

We built a new on-line store this year and are looking forward to new business through this medium. The on-line store is easy to use and provides the shopper with viewing many of the costume and accessory selections we carry in the store. Check it out at http://shop.perfectpartycostumes.com and get a jump on your holiday costumes and accessories.

All the best,

Bonnie

Holidays Are Almost Here!

What a great Halloween season! Thank you to all our customers who supported our business and made it a fun Halloween in spite of the concerns about economic conditions. We launched our new on-line shopping store http://shop.perfectpartycostumes.com/ the end of September. While it has been a slow start we are confident that momentum will build as people know we offer this service. It is convenient and a good way to see some of what is available in our actual store location.

We are currently preparing the store for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. For Thanksgiving we are offering fall patterned tableware, autumn leave decor and of course the standby centerpiece; the tissue paper turkey! For Christmas we have a variety of Santa Suits, reindeer, snowman and biblical costumes as well as decorations and tableware designed for the season. While we have a large quantity of Santa Suits to rent, it is always best to reserve your Santa suit early.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

All the best,

Easter Eggs and Bunny Tracks – Throwing the Best Easter Party

Easter doesn’t have to be just for kids, though perhaps the plastic eggs, grass, and little baskets might be. Easter is another good reason for a party, and because there aren’t too many “traditional” items for an Easter celebration, besides the aforementioned plastic goodies, the menu is totally up for grabs, though a little bunny stuffed and simmering as a centerpiece could be in poor taste (though never tasting poorly)! Truly, Easter is the first celebration of the spring season, so a celebration of youth, newness, and vibrancy is definitely in order!

If anything is traditional about Easter it has to be the bunny, the pastel colors, and the coloring of the eggs. Egg coloring is a time-honored tradition in my family, and we don’t go an Easter without one or all of us ending up with lavender colored palms or fingertips! Egg coloring kits can be found just about anywhere this time of year, but if you want one stop shopping, you should visit your local party supply store in order to stock up on other Easter essentials as well. Decorating for Easter can be easy or extremely elaborate depending on your want. Paper streamers, Easter-themed balloons, and of course, those plastic eggs are readily available as are a variety of choices when it comes to serving ware: plates, napkins, etc. If your family has no kids coming for the Easter celebration, no problem - adults deserve a good time to. Your party store will undoubtedly have adult-sized bunny ears on hand to embarrass and entertain all your friends as they imbibe adult beverages and sample the feast or snacks that are prepared. Photo opportunities and hilarious situations will be at a premium as your guests bound around having a jolly good time!

A celebration is always made better when a festive environment is created, when guests are encouraged into merrymaking by their inspired surroundings. A simple trip to purchase adequate party supplies can be the difference between a successful Easter “egg”stravaganza and an abysmal party failure. Your guests, children and adults alike, will thank you by having a fantastic time and filling your house or backyard with whoops, hollers, and shouts of glee. Getting them to leave in a timely might be your only concern. Oh, that and the easily forgettable task of cleaning up the aftermath of a fun afternoon, well worth the trouble!

Choosing the Perfect Song for a Telegram Delivery

If you are planning an unexpected surprise for a loved one’s birthday or any occasion for that matter, you can do no better than contracting a talented singing telegram deliverer to belt out a performance that entertains, amuses, honors, and perhaps even embarrasses the special boy or girl, providing long-lasting memories and an inordinate amount of smiles and laughter. The possibilities are of course endless as far as what famous celebrity or character you could choose. The real challenge comes in selecting the perfect song that sends a message and provides that extra punch of fun and spirit.

It can be very helpful to ask yourself a few simple questions concerning the recipient of the telegram. First off, does he or she have a favorite song? If so, the perfect pick is a no-brainer, it’s got to be that song if at all possible; whether it be the “Macarena”, “Like a Virgin”, or “Nessun Dorma”, you have to make that song happen for the recipient. If you are not so lucky as to know the guest of honor’s favorite or he or she doesn’t necessarily have one, it can often help the choosing go more smoothly by looking at the likes, dislikes, hobbies, and even the occupation of the person of special interest receiving the telegram. This sort of information can help in choosing the song, and even provide inspiration for manipulating the lyrics of a known song in order to personalize them for the upcoming performance. Maybe your wife, Susan, would be floored by a Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., or Michael Buble lookalike serenading her with “It Had to be Sue”, “I Get a Kick out of Sue”, or “Fly Me to my Sue”; sure these might all be cheesy, but isn’t that the point? Surely Sue will be falling out of her seat with laughter and joy, as will any others lucky enough to be in attendance! If creativity is not your particular cup of tea, many singing telegram providers have the talent and ingenuity to assist in the tailor-made crafting of a special song for that epic delivery to make the occasion all the more memorable.

A singing telegram is an excellent choice to show that special someone how you feel about them while entertaining them in the process. A specially selected or crafted song can be the added touch to truly make the singing telegram be a perfect success, ensuring the recipient never forgets how much you truly care!

A Perfect Party is Made Better With Balloons!

Whatever the occasion for your party, the right decorations are a must. Once your theme is decided upon (usually a specific holiday can influence that decision), it is a good idea to visit your local party supply store and purchase decorations that are congruent with your party’s overall aim. Along with all the serving ware, streamers, party favors, and the like, a party store often stocks a copious amount of choices when it comes to inflatables. Not only are your regular, garden-variety balloons on hand, but specially crafted, perfectly themed ones are often available as well to help your party really get off the ground in style.

When picking balloons, several factors come immediately to mind that one should consider. Size is one factor to think about. Balloons come in all sizes, and while larger balloons might make a greater impression and impact, they might not be practical for your budget or be as easily manipulated as smaller ones. The shape of a balloon might also be a factor that speaks specifically to your party’s needs. All shapes are readily available, from the round, to the oblong, the long and thin, to custom themed shapes as well. Custom shaped balloons are often constructed from Mylar, an extremely moldable plastic and polyester product; balloons made from Mylar possess properties that allow them to hold their helium longer, helping them stay aloft for longer periods than ordinary rubber crafted balloons can. If your party is not for a couple of days, a Mylar balloon should be among your choices if desiring your balloons are to be helium-filled. Mylar balloons often are available in a wide variety of specialized shapes not possible in rubber balloons such as stars, assorted geometric shapes, and shapes of various cartoon characters and the like. Another and perhaps the most influential factor when choosing balloons would be color. Balloons are now produced in every color under the sun, many with several colors or complex patterns to choose from additionally. Glossy colored balloons and flat colored balloons are available as well - which ever suits your party’s style the best. Slogans are often imprinted on many balloons that are available for purchase that might speak to your occasion specifically. “Best Wishes” or “Happy Birthday” are extremely popular and any party supply store is sure to stock balloons with these and many other appropriate sentiments. Many party stores provide helium for balloons at no extra charge, so ask if it is an option.

Your perfectly planned party will exceed the expectations of all your invited guests (and the host as well) if you make sure to have on hand the most fantastic and imaginative decorations and balloons possible. Your local party supply store is an excellent resource for ideas, products, and services to help ensure your party is a complete success!

Make Your Child’s Party Unforgettable with a Character Appearance!

It is that time of year again. Another birthday party for your child, and this time, he or she’s inviting all the friends from school. This is your chance to wow the friends and keep them talking about the party for months to come; providing instant popularity (you hope) for your son or daughter that will carry them through their awkward years (yes, they’re coming). A fun idea to make the party the most memorable one ever is to invite one of your child’s favorite celebrities to attend. No, Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) and the Jonas Brothers are most like unavailable and unaffordable, but a stand in just might be!

What better way to leave a lasting impression on your child and his or her friends this time around, than to have the party themed and centered around a character that he or she consistently goes bananas for? Minimal research is required, assuming your child is like most kids, it is easy to tell what characters are most appealing at any given time; just look at the notebooks, the bedroom walls, and listen, favorites often dominate conversations as well. If your child is on the younger side, often he or she will have a favorite animal or toy, such as a stuffed panda, horse, or the like. Contact your local costume shop, it is a good bet that they will have something in stock, for purchase or rental, that will make your child and all the party guests flip when it makes the scene. Many shops or character or mascot providers will have different rates providing the service you desire. Perhaps you don’t want to deal with the hassle of personally dressing in a bear suit or the like; hiring someone to appear in costume and entertain your guests would be a viable option in that case, freeing you up to host, take pictures, and thoroughly enjoy the merriment that ensues. Imagine the glee on your child’s face as the surprise party attendee arrives. Mom and dad will be heroes for the day, maybe even the week or month, due to the sensation the special guest creates. A character, depending on the arrangement, could quite possibly bring out the cake for that special moment, lead the attendees in the “Happy Birthday” song, and maybe even put on a special performance for the birthday guest and all the friends if desired.

Joy and carefree fun is what childhood and youth are all about. Fueling a youngster’s imagination and free-spiritedness with a special character appearance on a special day can be inspiring, simple, and so rewarding!

Entice Peter Cottontail Your Way With Perfect Party Supplies

Easter celebrations, especially for smaller children, are always tons of fun, endlessly entertaining, and memorable. The bright colors in the eggs, candies, and yes, plastic grass, reflect the hopeful entrance of warmer weather as Spring waits just around the corner, leaving the chilly temperatures of Winter behind. The secret to making this year’s Easter celebration more fun than ever lies in the small details and preparations. Having the right Easter themed party supplies on hand can go a long way toward luring the Easter Bunny down your lane to ensure your celebration is tons of fun for the adults and children alike!

First on the list has to be the Easter eggs for hiding and hunting. The main decision is whether to use plastic eggs or color hard-boiled ones from the henhouse. A traditionalist would of course go the natural route, detailing how much fun he or she remembered from their childhood coloring sessions - eggs weren’t the only colored objects, remember the pastel colored hands and fingers! Truly, if you’ve never dyed eggs with your children before, this should happen at least once, just be prepared for the mess and have your camera ready, of course! If dyeing is not your cup of tea, there are so many colors of plastic eggs available at the local party supplies shop. Plastic eggs of course have advantages over their natural counterparts. No stinky smell purveying your kitchen due to hard-boiling, no accidentally colored body parts (previously noted), and of course, the ability to hide jellybeans and other small surprises inside their plastic shells.

While at the local party supply store picking up plastic eggs, don’t forget the baskets and green, plastic grass your children will need to catch their oval-shaped bounties; what would you have them do, fill their pockets or hats? The secret to a fun Easter is going all the way not halfway, so those baskets are essential! Hiding and hunting for the eggs can be fun for the adults and the children. Don’t even fret if bad weather rears its ugly head and makes an outdoor hunt impossible. Children are highly adaptable and will have no problem moving the expedition inside to warmer, drier climes and will enjoy their Easter all the same, whether the sun joins in on the fun or not. Easter themed plates and serving-ware, decorations, balloons, and small surprises purchased at your party supply store will also add to your festivities, so don’t hesitate to grab all you can. You’ll quickly find that the more “over the top” your Easter celebration can be, the more fun for your children, their friends, and any parents that are lucky enough to attend!

Giving Your Loved One a Show for Their Special Day

Birthdays come and go every year, finding many gift-givers at a loss for providing their loved ones with something new, creative, and enjoyable, as part of efforts to make each and every one memorable. Often, certain gifts come to be expected, rather taken for granted, such as a nice dinner out, a movie, a small (or large) trip taken, and surprises seem to fall by the wayside. Busy schedules and appointment filled days make surprises and specially arranged gifts all the more rare and special, and so much more appreciated by those who receive them. Perhaps your loved one has a favorite celebrity or musical performer that would bring a smile to their face and a gleam to their eyes if surprised with an appearance or specially arranged performance. Of course, who can afford a true celebrity to make a dinner table stop-off, but a look-alike appearance or singing telegram would be enjoyable and almost as good; providing your loved one with a memorable birthday or other special occasion that won’t soon be forgotten!

Of course, a birthday is not the only occasion that could warrant such a special performance or surprise. Undoubtedly, your honey would melt provided an unexpected performance of the song you two first danced to or consider “your song”. An anniversary dinner date would be like no other with a singularly special serenade. If your spouse or mate doesn’t like the attention a public performance would surely bring, a house visit could be arranged and could surely help provide that extra spark and sizzle to spice up a special anniversary evening at home. Another occasion that is great for a singing telegram performance is a retirement party. The guest of honor will be delighted to hear songs from his or her heyday, perhaps from the year they started at the company, and the right performer can really ham it up; embarrassing the honoree is usually the occasion at a retirement party, and an entertaining singing telegram performance would surely provide that opportunity. Watching your honored coworker’s face turn bright red as he or she is made the center of attention will be entertaining in and of itself, so the camera had better be at the ready to capture those funny shots and secure the memories.

Try one and you will find that singing telegrams never fail to entertain and are always in fashion. A special occasion motivating an exciting and spontaneous performance will be made all the more memorable for all lucky enough to be on hand to experience the fun!

Creating the Perfect Environment to Party

Gathering friends and loved ones together to share food, drink, and merriment, never needs an occasion, but creating a hospitable environment for successful partying is easy when you make sure to shop wisely and have the best party supplies on hand. Supplies for your party should not be limited to decorations, but should expand to include plates, napkins, cups, and utensils; do you expect your guests to eat off a napkin or out of their hands? If a particular occasion has motivated the festivities, specifically themed products for the eats and drinks should definitely be on hand to get the invited revelers into the perfect mood.

Instead of traveling to your local big box store to pay way too much for party supplies that would undoubtedly be soulless and devoid of all creativity, your first and last stop for party supplies should definitely be a store that specializes in all things party: your local party supplier. A party supply shop stocks everything needed when you want to ensure your invited guests get in the mood and have a fantastic time. If Mardi Gras is your occasion to let loose, make sure to grab plenty of beads, masquerade style masks, and decorations in purple, green, and gold to make your guests think they’ve stepped right on in to the Big Easy. Of course, you probably won’t be able to grab your black-eyed peas, southern greens, or jumbalaya at the party shop, but you can certainly grab the Mardi Gras themed dinnerware and napkins to serve it on. Festively themed tablecloths, streamers, and banners will go a long way towards getting your revelers to keep dancing and enjoying themselves all the way until it’s time to cut the king cake! Perhaps you’re looking to host a Saint Patty’s party and need to find all your necessary green decorations without having to spend too much “green” in the process. Shamrocks, shillelaghs (sounds like shalaylees), and all things Irish can be found at your party purveyor; everything, that is, save for the green beer. I wager you’ll even find a couple choices of “Kiss me, I’m Irish” paraphernalia to keep your friends’ Irish eyes a-smiling.

No matter the occasion, your party will be special provided you don’t skimp on those special, oft-overlooked trappings that make your apartment, home, or office, look more festive to partygoers. The perfect environment you create will help your party be an overwhelming success!

Delivering a Heartfelt Message with Song

No matter the occasion, nothing says “I care” or “I love you” like an unexpected gift or special delivery. Sometimes a memory or special space that is created can be worth much more to that special someone than simply a card, box of candy, or other material gift. The special sensation of memory creation almost always motivates the senses to take a mental photograph of sorts, to be recalled later with fond feelings upon looking back. Sights, smells, and sounds impress upon the human mind in unbounded ways, and a special performance or special meal catalogued within a loved one’s mind can provide years and years of remembered joy. The gift of a song provided by a singing telegram delivery can motivate just such a special memory and should be considered the next time an occasion, big or small arises.

Singing telegrams can help add to a special mood that has already been created or produce a new one entirely. While always being fun and creative, a performance can be arranged that can be anything from loving and romantic, to crazy and hilarious. Local outfits specializing in singing telegram delivery are chock full of various options and star-quality talent that will doubtlessly leave a loved one in tears, fill them with chills, or rolling with laughter. Telegram deliverers can be ordered that can imitate well-known stars that hold a special place in that certain someone’s mind and heart. Imagine the thrill experienced by a Marilyn Monroe fan that receives a special appearance and a “boo boo ba-doo” from a young woman that seemingly channels the “je ne se qua” of Norma Jean herself. The velvety voice of “old blue eyes”, Frank Sinatra, can melt the coldest of cold hearts and make that special person indeed feel they have “the world on a string”, if only for that special moment the performance provides. Of course, in a public place, a singing telegram has the dualistic and somewhat dubious effect of embarrassing the focus of the delivery as well, especially if involving a character that just might joke at that person’s expense (if desired by the contracting party, of course). A delivery by funnyman Jerry Lewis or jokester can’t help but become a roast of sorts, and hopefully the “target” of the delivery has a great sense of humor after the performance ends!

Whether funny, zany, romantic, dreamy, or virtuosic, a singing telegram can make a memorable occasion even more memorable for all lucky enough to be in attendance and is a viable and entertaining option for a new and excitingly creative gift.

Raise a Ruckus, Attract Attention, and Build Your Business With a Mascot or Character Appearance

Slower economic times can make businesses, large and small, scramble for new ways to increase their customer base, reap higher profits, and keep business flourishing above and not floundering below the bottom line. Advertising has been and remains one of the most effective ways to get new customers in the door, but over the years, advertising tactics have evolved away from the tried and true mediums of radio and television, gravitating instead to the far-reaching web the Internet provides. Yet effective advertising need not always be high-tech. Many small businesses looking to increase foot traffic especially are turning to advertising ideas that have been around for centuries, namely sandwich boards, character appearances, and mascots.

A mascot or character appearance works similarly to the carnival barker of yesteryear. By using a highly visible, often flamboyant character as real-time advertising, businesses in the public sector are able to attract automobile and foot traffic effectively by simply being an out-of-the-ordinary occurrence, affording an otherwise invisible storefront the ability to be eye-catching and attractive. Mascot and character ideas can truly run the gamut, from a large furry animal like a moose or Sasquatch, to a celebrity lookalike such as Marilyn Monroe or Al Capone. A mascot or character appearance can be especially effective for grand opening celebrations or special holiday occasions by directing attention to a sales event or new offering to customers. Imagine a sales promotion at a car dealership where management has gone “ape” or “bananas” by slashing prices to their lowest. Well of course this calls for a gorilla with a large prop banana in hand! For a furniture store advertising prices that have been non-existent since the 1920s, it is essential to have a gangster and an unflappable flapper onboard to help drum up business and get customers to reach for their pocketbooks or wallets. Character and mascot uses are endless and can be extremely effective, while also being a lot of fun!

As a business owner, it is imperative to get customers inside your location’s doors in order to show them all the wonderful wares or services you have to offer. If there are no customers to sell to, no sales are made, and profits will definitely suffer. By thinking outside the box of conventional advertising, you will undoubtedly be able to draw in a new customer base, while perhaps causing a scene and providing free smiles and laughter to all who are lucky enough to simply pass by.

Decorating is Essential to Make Your Perfect Party Successful

Have you ever been to a party with the perfect food, the perfect music, maybe even the perfect guests, and sensed there was something missing but couldn’t quite put your finger on it? Often times, hosts go overboard in planning their menu, entertainment, and guest list, while one essential ingredient goes overlooked. An extremely important facet of perfect party planning and execution continues to be adequate effort and thought applied towards decorating the environment in which the festivities are held. Decorations can go a long way towards making guests feel like letting their hair down, losing their inhibitions, relaxing, and truly making them feel the occasion warrants partying and or “getting down”.

Decorating according to a theme or occasion can be as simple or as complex as the host’s tastes desire. The occasion often can help dictate the design and decoration options. Perhaps it is time for the annual office winter holiday party and you’ve been given the illustrious position of party planner. Of course, it is your desire to make this party more memorable than ones past, hopefully motivating a nod of approval from your superiors in the process. Paper streamers or hanging snowflakes are tried and true options to make your winter holiday party brighter, but might seem too passé for your crowd. Besides, you want to do something bigger and better than Anne from accounting, last year’s party planner. Perhaps it is time to pull out the big guns: rent that snow machine you saw at your local party supplies outfitter. Nothing screams “Winter Wonderland” like drifting and floating sugary flakes, begging partygoers to indulge their sweet tooth with candy canes, hot chocolate, and sugary holiday treats. Your office mates will be begging for mistletoe, dancing beneath the shimmering flakes, your winter offering helping to soften the blow of a Christmas bonus-less year.

Any occasion can motivate a fantastic party, and sometimes, parties are needed, for no occasion whatsoever. Party decorations supply that necessary ingredient that puts your gathering above the others, into the upper echelon of festive occasions, those that have attendees comparing successive parties to for years to come. Your local party supply store should always be your first and many times, your only stop when looking for the perfect party necessities, whether it be decorations, costumes, napkins, plates, et al. Feeling uninspired? Your local party supplier can help with that too, helping ensure that your gathering is memorable, exciting, and always, out of the ordinary!

Preparing the Menu for the Perfect Party

Perhaps a relative is arriving at your house that has been away far too long, an anniversary or other special date is upcoming, or a holiday nears that beckons for your annual tradition of “whooping it up”. Whatever the occasion, whatever the reason, you have decided to organize and throw a party that you hope will be successful. A successful party entails keeping your guests fully entertained, well served, and often results in them staying on, late into the evening. A successful party demands a proper amount, but of course, not too detailed planning, in order to run smoothly, yet still keep its “coolness” and spontaneity.

Perhaps a good place to start would be your proposed menu; you can’t have guests standing around hungry and thirsty of course (or in the case of a Super Bowl party, sitting on their duffs watching the pigskin move with empty tummies). Have people come to expect the usual suspects at your parties? Are salty chips, cocktail wienies, and crackers often in attendance? Maybe it is time to mix it up a bit by serving something a little heartier such as your great Aunt Mattie’s homemade, four alarm chili or Uncle Bertrand’s killer, blue cheese steamed mussels. Getting creative with the grub you offer can always help score points with the partygoers as well as serving the dual purpose of offsetting any alcoholic beverages you might choose to serve. And moving to that subject, sporting events, such as the Super Bowl do demand some salty snacks and beer, so don’t feel that those are out of the question. Everyone appreciates a bucket of cold ones, or if feeling particularly flush (and thirsty) a pony keg or its bigger, more filling brother will suffice. Provided the theme or occasion of the festivities, clues of what to serve may become extremely evident. A Kentucky Derby party, for instance, cannot commence without the requisite mint julep in one hand and a plate of Kentucky Burgoo (pulled pork, chicken, beef, and veggies) in the other. A southern themed party deserves its fair share of fried and well-appointed comfort food, salty snacks, and a certain charcoal-mellowed, sour mash whiskey should be on tap.

Whatever menu items you decide to serve, it is a great idea to keep your china cabinet locked up and purchase disposable dinnerware for use instead. The options for party plates, napkins, and cups are many, and your local party store can supply you with specially themed products that cater to each specific occasion. Ample party supplies are necessary accoutrements that can help your festive occasion to run more smoothly and become a memorable happening that leaves your guests begging for more, more, and more!

Finding the Perfect Costume

Many people become exceedingly frustrated when they are pressed to find an appropriate costume for a seasonal costume ball. Often resorting to old and stale standbys such as a “witch” or “vampire” because of their relative ease, creatively-challenged costume party goers always come up short when trying to impress friends and acquaintances by having trouble thinking “outside the box”. Picking the perfect costume can be a challenge, but the fun feeling that comes from finding “the one” is irreplaceable. Many different aspects can make a costume desirable or attractive to a particular individual with, as always, creativity coming in to play.

A costume that is timely or in keeping with current events can always be a winner. Taking a page out of the headlines while giving it a comic twist is often a hit, especially in a politically minded crowd. Of course taste can come into play when mirroring current events. It may be inadvisable to wear a costume having to do with a recent tragic happening or at least having the readiness to accept and deal with negative fallout such a costume may inspire. Yet, one that is held in the collective consciousness as funny (a certain vice-president’s hunting excursion comes to mind) just might become a surefire crowd pleaser.

Having a partner or mate that is also attending a costume party can really help to broaden horizons and increase creativity. Brainstorming with a friend or mate for couple-themed costumes can be a blast and shopping with a cohort can help raise the creativity and fun to higher levels. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb, Ziegfried and Roy, Marilyn and Jack Kennedy, are but a few that come quickly to mind. Celebrity costume pairings are in abundance at local shops and can exponentially up the wow factor at any costume ball.

Shopping for that perfect costume can be as simple as visiting the local hobby store if feeling crafty, or as complex as visiting the local costume shop. Not only do many costume shops have a wide selection of purchasable outfits and accessories, some offer a back stock of more extravagant and expertly made specialty costumes that are available for rental for the evening or weekend. Often, employees at a costume shop can be an excellent resource as well for ideas. Also, displays and in stock items at a local store could provide the necessary inspiration to motivate the perfect costume for an upcoming event. Whether purchased, rented, or homemade, a thought-inspired and thought-provoking costume is attainable; it only requires a little time and energy to find the perfect fit!
